Khartoum Siege
On 15 April 2023, life changed for millions of Sudanese people—and for me.
I was given a new lease on life. Many others were not. And while I could leave, millions have had to endure a war that continues long after the last evacuation flight disappeared from the headlines.
More than three years later, Sudan is suffering. In 2026, UNICEF estimates that 33.7 million people need humanitarian assistance, including 17.3 million children. Behind those numbers are people with homes, families, ambitions and friends. The Sudanese people treated me as family. They are my tribe, my brothers and sisters.
My survival doesn’t make my life more important than anyone else’s. But I was there, and I have a story I can tell. Each of us can do something to bring attention to Sudan. This is my contribution.
Khartoum Siege is a twelve-episode personal account, bringing together my writing, photographs, video and messages recorded along the way. It tells what I lived through, the people whose paths crossed mine, and how I came to leave a country where so many others remained.
This story will be told.
My voice, in my own name
There are stories I want to tell and things I believe need to be said. Some come from extraordinary moments; others from years of working in an industry I care deeply about. They concern the people we work with, the wildlife we encounter, and the consequences of the decisions we make.
I love the sea and the opportunities it has given me. That also means being willing to question what happens around it: practices we accept without thinking, promises that don’t survive contact with reality, and the distance between what we say we stand for and what we actually do.
On TheOceanRoamer, I speak in my own name. My work with the International Association of Dive Professionals (IADP) is part of my life, but the association has its own institutional voice. Here, I take responsibility for my own words, opinions and conclusions.
I write from experience, with all the limits that brings. I haven’t seen everything, and I don’t have every answer. You are welcome to disagree, bring another perspective or challenge something I’ve written. I want a conversation that helps us understand more.
Becoming a supporting member gives me time to do that work properly: return to the archives, follow the threads, write the difficult passages and bring these stories to life through words, photographs, sound and video.
Some of that work will remain public. Support helps me keep sharing it, including with people who cannot afford a membership. If these stories move you, make you think or give you something worth discussing, I hope you’ll help me carry them forward.
